2017年2月　旧家より煤竹が出てきた　との報を受けて

雪深い宮津へ　トラックで引き取りにお伺いしました

この1年間　少しづつ使えそうなものを選び　洗っては油抜きをして

何とか4割ほどは製品にできそうな　美しい光沢の煤竹の材料が集まりました

囲炉裏の使用頻度がとても高かったのか　1割ほどですが

固く身が締り　割れがなく虫食い跡もない　良質な材がありました

Rさんのチェックはここまでですが　後には　この道40年の職人Sさんの仕事の中で

それは細かい検品を受けて　品物となっていきます

囲炉裏文化の副産物である煤竹ですが　材料加工工程で感じたことは

ただただ　旧家のご主人の保管状態が完ぺきだったなということです

納屋の中で風雨や日差しから材を守るよう　丁寧な保管がされており

乾燥による割れが　かつてなく少なかったのです　おまけに

ご自宅までの手書きの地図も　それは丁寧で　有難く頭の下がる思いがしました

暮らしがひとの手で紡がれていて　何をやるにも時間のかかった時代の

その生活の1コマには　人々の五感を通した知恵や工夫が豊かに込められていたのかもしれない

美しく仕上がっていく煤竹を見ながら　その時代の人々に　思いを馳せる

February 2017, having a news that sooted bamboo has been found in old house,
we headed to Miyazu, northern area of Kyoto prefecture, to get these bamboo on truck.

During this year, selecting those which seems to be usable, we washed and removed oil
to pick out beautifully gleaming sooted bamboo by which we can make some products.

I don’t know if it is because of using the open hearth quite often, but 10% of sooted
bamboo were so firm without any cracks or moth holes which would turn to be excellent
materials.

After I’ve checked, it is Mr. S, a craftsman with 40 years of experience in this filed,
who would make products through the most careful test.

Sooted bamboo is a kind of by-product of lifestyle with open hearth, but during my work I found out that the owner has
conserved them under perfect condition. He stored these materials carefully inside of a barn to keep them away from rain,
wind and sunlight. This has been proved by the fact that there are less cracks due to
desiccation than ever. Furthermore, I’d like to take off my hat to his way of drawing a map to his house
as it was made with great care.

In old times, when people needed more time to do everything, there might be wisdom
and ingenuity through five senses in every scene of their lives.

I give thought to people of that time, seeing sooted bamboo that turns to be
a beautiful product.
